Police Memorial in Sunrise

Soon, Sunrise will be home to a new Broward County Police Memorial Wall of Honor. The structure will feature a wall with the names of more than 60 officers who have died in the line of duty in Broward since 1914. The groundbreaking was held in February on one-acre site in Markham Park just down the road from Sawgrass Mills Mall and Urban Sawgrass. I thought it was a great idea and great ideas need public support. At the recent Sam's Club Block Party, I have made a donation towards this great cause. I invite all residents and readers to participate in this cause. Please remember, no donation is too small. Please donate to this great cause through Honor Guard of Broward County.

Most of us have heard about AAA. Many of us have relied on them to get us out of trouble, whether it be a locked car or a broken down vehicle on the side of the road. But most of us don't even know what AAA stands for. Automobile Association of America has been around for almost 100 years and has been helping motorists for just as long. Did you know that AAA has an office right here in the neighborhood, just east of the Sunrise Blvd and Flamingo Rd intersection?

Head First by O'Reilly

Browsing the dwindling collection of books at Borders, I discovered an interesting "new" book series. It's called "Head First". Published by O'Reilly (which specializes in computer-related titles), it should be the new "For Dummies" series for the brightest and the busiest of us. Unlike the "For Dummies" series (which has significantly improved recently), the "Head First" series does not try to dumb the content down. On the contrary, it uses visuals, stories, activities and challenges to present the content while keeping your brain engaged.

Somehow, the series has been out since 2004, but has not gotten my attention until now. On top of programming-related books, they offer math-related titles. Don't be embarrased anymore when trying to help your child with homework. Grab a Head First title and show them that you know what you are talking about.
