Keep FPL On Its Toes

As everyone else around here, I get my electricity from FPL. Usually, I have no complaints about their service, and this article is not to complain. What prompted me to write about the company is the latest "issue" of FPL Energy News newsletter that was included with the most recent bill. In it, in two separate instances, the company decided to engage in a sort of wishful thinking.

In the "Working too improve your service", the company explains how we could let it know about non-working street light. It asks for the light's nearest street address and landmarks. Then it states that "Alternatively, you may provide the 11-digit number mounted on the streetlight pole". So, in no uncertain terms, we are told that the pole's ID is sufficient (and common sense would lead us to the same conclusion). However, my experience with reporting a broken street light using the 11-digit ID was unsuccessful a couple of years ago. Let's hope the things have improved since then.

In the "ask the Energy Expert" column, FPL responds to a customer complaining about flickering lights and frequent power interruptions. The company uses the opportunity to tell us how much effort it puts into improving the reliability of their service as well as reminds us to keep tree branches away from the power lines. Lightning strikes and animals are also mentioned as sources of interruptions. What the company fails to mention that there may INDEED be a bad power line in your vicinity that they will have to replace. It could be on a pole near you or underground, and it is by no means "customer-serviceable part". It may cost FPL a small fortune to fix (considering that it may be affecting only a single residential customer who does not generate significant revenue), but you should get the company to act on it fast before you lose your appliances and other equipment to another sudden current spike. At the very least, protect the most valuable equipment by unplugging it when not in use or using UPS power backups that protect against surges.
