Red-light cameras
Friday, 08 April 2011 08:33

Most of you already know that Sunrise is planning on installing 4 red light cameras at different intersections on Flamingo Rd. There will also be red light cameras at some of the other intersections in Sunrise. A recent article in Sun-Sentinel states that red-light cameras do not improves safety according to Fort Lauderdale accident data.

Go With Vonage For Your Phone Service

When was the last time you used your home phone (aka landline)? Probably not in a while. Or, if you have, you most likely don't use it often enough. Everyone's got a cell phone now - so why pay up to $50 per month for an old technology you may not even need?

Sunrise Doesn't Get It
Thursday, 24 February 2011 09:10

City of Sunrise's vision involves creating a "downtown" around the Sawgrass Mills Mall. Tao was the first completed development from that vision. The basic building blocks of any downtown are its sidewalks. It's what connects lots, houses, businesses, neighborhoods, and, ultimately, people. Sidewalks put the "walk" in walkable.  But for many of Tao's residents, walkable means jumping through grass in the undeveloped lot to get to Bahama Breeze, walking along curbs and trying to avoid getting hit by cars when crossing a 5-lane road with no medians, pedestrian crossing signs or a properly labeled crosswalk.

Though Wannado City at Sawgrass Mills mall has closed for good, (it was too expensive from what I hear), it doesn't mean you have to leave town to enjoy quality entertainment with your kids. The following places let your kids play, learn, exercise and grow and plus you can sit back, relax and grab a tasty bite.

Kids Hub - brand new place which opened in the second half of 2010. Kids Hub is located in a shopping plaza at the corner of Sunrise Blvd and Yellow Toucan Rd, at the west end of Sawgrass Mills. A recent stop by on a saturday evening had a plenty of people using this facility. Good job Kids Hub and good luck.

Yummy in my Tummy - store offering healthy and organic food for babies.

Monkey Joe's - located outside the UrbanSawgrass triangle but only a short drive away. Monkey joes features play and exercise areas for your kids. Located in as strip mall at the corner of W Oakland Blvd and Hiatus Road.

Young at Heart - located just a few miles south of Sawgrass Mills, in Davie. YaH is currently constructing a newer and bigger building just west of it's current location. You can see the progress everyday if you happend to enter I595 eastbound at Flamingo Road. The building is on the right side when taking the onramp.

The Fox Observatory - reveals the beauty of the universe when it opens its doors to the public free of charge on Saturdays from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. The South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association sponsors the weekly program at the observatory at Markham Park, 16001 W. State Road 84, in Sunrise. 954-384-0442.

New Florida Blue "store"

Blue Cross Blue Shield, the insurance company, has opened a new office/store next to Ashley Furniture and across the road from JC Penney outlet (which is by the way, soon to be closing). This office is located in a brand new and visually beautiful building which was just completed.

IM4Transit. I support smart planning, transit oriented development, protection of the environment and workable public transit systems. I also support workable and livable downtowns, including one around Sawgrass Mills mall. Metropica, a transit oriented development has been proposed for the empty lot on the west side of the mall.

Development at NE Corner of Flamingo & Panther Pkwy
Thursday, 24 February 2011 18:51

Finally, there is some development in the fenced off lot of Artesia at the NE corner of Flamingo Road and Panther Parkway (NW 136 Av). This lot has been fenced off for years, and the original plans placed a "podium"-style 4-story building on it. However, last year city commisioners gave in and allowed Minto to build townhouses. I see some "dirt movement". Is this the beginning of the "unplanned" townhouses? More on the downscaling of the beautiful Artesia to come.
